will write a bit more but just want to point out. WHICH CHARACTER WASN’T MENTIONED DESPITE US FINDING THE FATE OF GEORGE, IZZIE, THATCHER, SUSAN, DENNY, BURKE ET AL, MAYBE BECAUSE THE WRITERS DON’T SEE HER AS PERSON BUT A TOOL FOR WEBBER/MER STORY?
OH YES I NOTICED.
It was an especially highlighted omission since she was even *in* the intro reel for a moment. Although I guess *that* wasn’t about her either, just reminding us what a great guy Webber is, or the choices he’s made in his life, or… something.
See, I am invested in the Webber/Meredith storyline since always, but how GA’s been treating Adele of late has actually made me less so. Plus irritated.
1. CONCERNING IF/THEN
basically agree in every way shape and form with my esteemed colleague. A good AU either puts the characters in a different situation to view how they would react thus illustrating pivotal points or exploring their chracters out of their usual situations.
THIS WAS NONE OF THIS.
and on top of this, it was utterly NONSENSICAL. if meredith is happier she isn’t friends with Izzie and George because…. if Merdedith’s mother is nicer her husband kills himself after his new wife dies because… his daughter doesn’t go to medical school because…. his third daughter doesn’t exist because….
and also as a former viewer of PP, the differing interpersonal relationships at the hospital mean Addie can have kids because….?
Really like your point about this being Eridan’s equivalent to Hemostuck, originally i was going to point out that Lexi didn’t fall for his charms but thinking about Eridan her rejecting his offer and then being punished for it is…deeply IC.
And yeah, it is blatantly a ‘aren’t things so much better our way’ au, jeez.
(oh sorry one last thing it might just be me being me but was owen portrayed WAY too sympathetic for a dude whose PTSD manifested in violent rages and whose wife was terrified he was going to take it out on their kids?)
2. Concerning the final episode of S2.
I know you don’t have time for a full rewatch from the beginning but this is perfect for a good view of Indigo blood Webber.
The scene where he tries to break the interns to find out who cut Denny’s LVAT is a perfect showcase of fear and different techniques based on targets to achieve his goal. There’s a fantastic scene where Cristina has her Karkat moment and freaks out about not being a pure troll any more, letting emotions and weakness kill her savagery and ambition and she begs Webber to explain how he manages it, he says he won’t give her answers that will cost her her humanity. In earth GA this is obviously a sympathetic gesture but in AGA he either 1) wants his chosen protege to learn on her own two feet 2) not strengthen future competition.
Oh and as ever the one thing that breaks him is mention of Ellis. Much like Eq the lowblood is his greatest weakness.
Also he terrifies his neice’s bf which is nice because I like people admitting how terrifying he is.
Jeez that is a lot of words.
1. For some reason, you are in need of a live-action object lesson in irredeemably atrocious fandom AUs.
No, but this was a bad story, ineptly told. The first rule of AUs is that you pick your point of divergence, and then show how that change - those different start values fed through the function of your world and characters - leads to interesting results! You can’t just throw nonsense together and then shrug and say “Ellis did it.” Argh.
Another guideline is to choose that causality fork carefully, as opposed to, for example, What If Meredith’s mother was alive, healthy, had achieved most if not all of her life goals, was in a happy long term domestic situation… and had no character development over the decades from beyond Meredith’s direst memories of her, and everyone she interacts with becomes magically compelled* to obey her least passing whim?
(*at about the halfway point, I began to wonder if the true divergent point wasn’t actually indigo!Webber’s really, really long term trolling game vs. everyone, Ellis Grey especially. I know I would start to question the nature of my reality if everyone around me was magically compelled to obey my least passing whim.)
All of that, and it was boring as fuck.
I suppose I am meant to be giving the Alternian view here, but honestly I don’t care enough to add much to what I said last night. An alternate universe will go through some nasty contortions to see that Cristina <> Meredith happens as it is fated to, the end.
You’d think that “Random AU for the sole purpose of exalting quadrant serendipity” would be a thing trolls would find poignant, but c’mon. I bet that is a cliche that shows up all over the place in their serial media, and they’d be unimpressed with our poor attempt at the trope.
Also, I am just going to repeat this for the tag, because it is true: the troll version of this episode is Wouldn’t It Be Terrible If The Lowbloods Were In Charge So Terrible Wow We Are So Lucky Troll Society Is The Way It Is.
Like maybe what this is is Eridan Ampora deciding to write a Grey’s Anatomy fanfic in the tradition of Hemostuck, and somehow lost most of Avery’s manpain/the scenes where Avery is totally gettin it on with Cristina Yang: Black Stud: Evveryone Hates Her: But Only Avvery Is Troll Enough To Make A Movve: Even Though He Has It Hard Bein A Seadwweller In A Yellowwblood’s Hospital: And Too Pretty For This Wworld: Goodbye Forever…
…okay, I forgot what I was complaining about somewhere in there.
Tangentially to that, I was complaining at someone else about Owen Hunt, and she said yes, but it was pretty great that the show itself seems to be of the opinion Owen is wrong and creepy. I am not sure - the show itself has always been more sympathetic to Owen than *I* am - but maybe?
tho idc I just want them to break up already.
So you know how I was thinking about SBURB titles? well it may have…escalated.
I was thinking about what our doctors would prototype.
Webber uses Ellis (everyone hate Ellissprite)
Bailey prototypes George (Alex and the audience hate O’Malleysprite)
Cristina and Derrick have no time for things that talk properly so whenever they meet Scalpelsprite and Ferryboatsprite just happily natter away in an inhuman tongue that makes everyone feel really uncomfortable.
I am sure PP has many good points (unless it was that episode with the car crash)! Also, at least Sburb is generous with the medical-related titles. Seer of Blood, Page of Heart, Knight of Spleen?
it really doesn’t! basically I <3 Addie and Angel broke me and I’ll watch any show with a couple with the Lilah/Wesley dynamic and Cooper/Charlotte had that so I kept watching.
(I wanted Izzie to be the thief of breath based purely on the Denny plot line, hoo hoo hoo)
basically off the top of my head
Speculation about the AU episode and a joke about cristina not having a moirail to warn her against that fringe (which I thought was witty)
thinking we should maybe make a master list of our blood colours and a shameful admission that i’ve thought about SBURB titles
a half hearted defence of private practise
a CAPSLOCK HEAVY rant about how owen/cristina will never be over :(
Hi! In case anyone hasn’t noticed, “cristina yang is my favourite troll” is the tag to block if Grey’s Anatomy & Homestuck mashups along various axes aren’t a thing relevant to your interests.
So… everyone who is not me and Davide, I presume.
They’re doing a fucking beta session!
Ahahaha! HAHAHAHA! ok.
Did part of this get eaten somehow?
jesus butts, i wrote a really long post and i’m not rewriting it :(
THIS IS WHAT I GET FOR BEING CONSIDERATE TO MY FOLLOWERS
indigo blood webber is hilarious and terrifying.
i feel like alex used all his</p>
Okay, but first, the MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION YOU HAVE RAISED IS
how do you have line breaks in this ask?
How did that happen?
I immediately went and tried like 3 browsers in attempt to replicate the effect, so.
indigo blood webber is hilarious and terrifying.
I wonder if, at this point, Webber even bothers resorting to the mIrAcLeS. These kids are hardly a challenge to poke holes in as they are. (…Interesting that Webber got an addiction narrative as well, randomly.)
ALEX DO NOT OPEN YOURSELF UP TO THE DUDE WHO TALKS PEOPLE INTO SUICIDE.
Oh, jeez, I am now imagining Alex walking out of that episode thinking Chief Webber was hate-hitting on him. POOR GUY. WILL HE EVEN SHOW UP THIS WEEK, OR WILL HE HAVE RUN AWAY? (The first one, let’s face it, he does not make the most brilliant decisions.)
ftr, I think Webber was honestly doing “Wise Mentoring”. Just… in a way… that would give him maximum lulz…
…if indigo!Webber wasn’t already fake-canon, now would be the time.
i feel like alex used all his <3< on rubbish george
…yeah, I can see that. He hasn’t been much interested in sustaining any <3<’s since, that is for sure.
I’m not sure it’s because George was the uberthreat in his eyes though, rather than, like, he keeps opening himself up for pity from people who were never going to give him any. I still think that boy needs to get his pale quadrant stable before starting over with the concupiscent ones. But he sucks at that! He is just gonna silently pity Meredith Grey, that is healthy right?
Oh, oh hey! Maybe this was his deal with trying to get everyone else to pacify Arizona’s behaviour in the twin baby* surgery rather than try calming her down himself. We know she is pale as fuck for him; she would probably take it as a reciprocation.
and oh god kepner, you are the worst, you’re ruining the best hatelove :(
*side eyes you* You mean ashen-type hate, right? Like, you aren’t actually shipping them as full on black, are you?
Because you would be so wrong. That is all I’m saying.
Not that Kepner had any effect except getting herself shut down hard.
(Seriously, it is *amazing* how well GA still holds together through this lens.)
(Also, I may want to retract my previous comment about Bailey’s “matesprit”, haven’t decided. Past references to kissing aside, it’s a very pale romance drama, isn’t it? “I know who you are.” No wonder things are awkward.)
(Also2, is it just me, or do Mark and Avery have some weird pity-based rivalry going on? Mark, do you need to have Karkat write a blog post explaining how you are messing up all the neatly labelled categories? AGAIN?)
*in Troll Grey’s Anatomy, what do we think, members of a colonized species? The waiting room outburst would make more sense anyway. Eg, “Even if I have to sit around with judgy trolls.”
[ETA: SORRY EVERYONE ELSE. I GUESS “READ MORE” TAGS DON’T DO ANYTHING ON ANSWERS BUT ADD HTML GIBBERISH? ARGH.]
I have now watched this week’s Grey’s Anatomy! Yay! So, as usual, here are my guesses at topics around the Alternian GA fanbase.
- So glad Meredith Grey <3< Miranda Bailey didn’t stop being a thing or anything. Wooo! Best ship thank you. But seriously, drafting your black crush to mediate between you and your maybe matesprit? I get that you needed the worst example of a person you could think of, Miranda, but this was not the plan of a focused mind.
- April Kepner’s misread of the tension between Cristina Yang and Teddy Altman and her inappropriate ashen outbust. How can a person be so bad at navigating the only quadrant she is interested in? I suppose the apparent deterioration of the Cristina c3- Teddy c3- ….stuff(?) romance would have been extra upsetting for her to watch then, but nah, it wouldn’t have lasted this long if Teddy couldn’t even mediate between Cristina and *herself*. (Having too many feels about Cristina Yang’s conciliatory relationships, that should be my tag for this nonsense instead.)
- Hypothetical troll!Webber is *so* an indigo blood, okay, wow was odditycollector right about that. Although that would have made his “Once, I was young and mighty” speech to Alex read kinda differently, because yes, literal legend here, but Alex has none of the right issues to be among the longer lived troll castes.
- Relatedly, why was the human GA fanbase annoyed with Webber! The world is not your morail, and being too free with your trust and pity is a good way to get taken advantage of (and then killed): the question is not if this is a good thing to teach your students, but how it is Alex survived so long without learning it yet!
